This poem was discovered mysteriously in my Mom's house, a few days after my Dad died, and kept on the bulletin board until read by a good friend of the family at my Mom's funeral on October 24, 2008.

Because the doctor wanted to remeasure the kidneys, we get a rare 32 week glimpse of the baby. The kidneys are fine. According to their measurements, the baby is 4 lbs 1 ounce so far.

I wish I could be back in the womb. I wish someone would push me around in a stroller. Maybe I could hire that really tall Chinese guy from the Guiness Book of World Records to push me around in an oversized stroller. Even if it was only for a month or two. That would be fine.

Baby's First Thunderclap

Last night, a storm came through that seemed to produce only one thunderclap, lots of rain, but only one, very loud thunderclap. It happened around 1:00 am and woke me, Hayden, the cat and the unborn baby up. Shortly after the thunder clapped, Hayden felt a stirring in her belly and a few kicks. I wonder if it scared the baby. I would like to think that fear does not exist in the womb. I'm thinking it just woke the baby up and he/she was blissfully unaware of anything other than a loud noise - a muffled loud noise. When and why did we become afraid of thunder when we were kids? Or afraid of anything? I think it would have to be that time after you've gained knowledge of a thing but before you've gained enough knowledge of the thing to render it harmless, the wisdom to avoid it, the courage to confront it, or the love to.... conquer it? I dunno. I'm mad at that cloud for waking my baby up. And now, I gotta get back to work.

You know the old story - Lightning bug gets kidnapped by kid and taken inside, lightning bug gets sucked down a bathroom drain while playing guitar blues in the shower, lightning big gets picked up by underground cockroach talent agent, lightning bug becomes famous but really just wants to get home, lightning bug gets more famous and starts to like it, lightning bug gets booked at the outdoor Hollow Log Amphitheater and there has a decision to make - do I stay or do I go? Lightning bug decides to stay but gets kidnapped back into the wild. And lives happily ever after.

The Discovery of Wilson Peabody

On a warm Alaskan night, Wilson Peabody, perched high in his treetop observatory, searched the night sky. Ignoring the call of his friends to come down and play spotlight, Wilson remained vigilant. “Such children,” Wilson thought. “They have no idea I’m about to make the greatest discovery known to man.” Whhoooosh. A brilliant flash of light streaked across the sky. Wilson took cover from the sparks showering down. This was no ordinary shooting star. Wilson was amazed as he could see it glowing just over the horizon . So he shimmied down the tree, hopped onto his bike and raced down the road into the deep, dark forest. The light up ahead was getting brighter and brighter until finally Wilson came to a lake where he saw the bright orb hovering just over the water. As amazing of a discovery as this was already, Wilson was not satisfied. So he jumped into a paddle boat, and pedaled furiously toward the bright orb. The closer Wilson got, the easier it was to paddle until soon he didn't need to paddle at all but was being pulled into the giant orb. "It's the smallest planet in the universe," Wilson exclaimed as he fell into the planet. Now, as amazing a discovery as this would have been, Wilson was still not satisfied. Light as a feather, Wilson slowly slid across the sky at a very enjoyable, very fortunate descent. The land below was brilliant, filled with all kinds of brightly colored plants and animals, slithering and flittering about. Wilson was speechless and absolutlely had to see more. Down, down, down Wilson fell into this strange new world. But then, Wilson looked directly below him and made a discovery that did not particularly excite him. There was a large beast with its mouth wide open. The further Wilson fell, the bigger the beast got and the more numerous the teeth. Wilson realized that if he did not alter his current trajectory that he would soon be swallowed whole. Wilson struggled with all his might to move east or west or north or south, any which way but down. But he couldn't. Desperate, Wilson looked up into the sky for something to grab onto. And there in the sky, Wilson saw the most beautiful lights he had ever seen dancing in the the sky. They stopped and started, turned and darted in all different directions, almost as if they were playing with each other. And that's when Wilson realized they were playing with each other. They were his friends playing spotlight. Wilson couldn't bear to watch. He closed his eyes and awaited his doom. AAAAA-CHOOOO!!! The beast let out an enourmous sneeze. Instead of landing in its mouth, Wilson had apparently landed in the nostril causing it to sneeze. WAAHOOO!!! The force of the sneeze sent Wilson hurling back through the sky, out of the atmosphere and all the way back across the forest, tumbling through the trees, crashing with a thud on the ground. Wilson stood up, brushed himself off and made sure he was still in one piece. Just a few hundred yards away, Wilson saw the lights he had seen dancing in the sky. They were his friends. And that's when Wilson made the most important, most wonderful discovery in the history of mankind.

These leaf piles were so big they move, usually after dark. You can see the little legs in brown leotards underneath the piles when they walk. They don't move far, only a few steps. In this picture they are all crouching. They're a quiet, reserved bunch.

Why do you do it? To all those web loggers out there who post entries with titles that start with 'on' this or 'on' that, stop doing that. Instead of saying "On Turkey Dinners" just say "Turkey Dinners." Or if you want to say something about the weather, instead of saying "On The Weather" just say "The Weather." I know you want to make a comment 'on' something and that's fine but just make the comment and move on. Forget 'on'. Or maybe say "Ode to Turkey Dinners"

Yesterday Kedzie went live as a fully outdoor cat. We have been training her for the past couple of months. We would let her out but only allowed her to go so far, never letting her out of our sight. But yesterday, we did. Pure uninhibited, unadulterated feline curiosity allowed to express itself fully in our little Kedzie. Would she remember, or know how to find her way home? Yes. Yes she did. Twice! To look out the window wondering where she is only to find her spawled out on the front porch - ahhh, FREEDOM!!!

Then I started to think about why I took this picture. It's proof that I'm actually here, that this actually happened and that I'm actually standing in a house that I own.
